Dornes, Portugal
Dornes is a village in Central Portugal which, despite its size, is rich in natural beauty and history. It is set in a beautiful, rural location with views of the surrounding hills and the River Zêzere (or Lake Castelo do Bode).
It is an ideal holiday location whether you are looking for a holiday to sit back and relax or wish to use it as a base to discover the local area, or even a combination of both.
The river/lake is ideal for swimming, the waters are clear and generally warmer than the Atlantic coast or most swimming pools. There are two river beaches and discovering the river by boat or kayak adds another dimension to your holiday.

Dornes
There are 2 Restaurants/Cafes in Dornes. Elvira's, on the main road, is a friendly family run cafe/restaurant and here you will be offered delicious local fish that has been freshly caught by the owner's fair rod! Very much an informal dining experience but I cannot recommend this family highly enough. They are rare gems.
Just beyond my back door, in the heart of the village and with river views, you will find Restaurant O Rio -take a peek at the video on this page to discover more. This is a more formal dining experience. Before planning to pop round the corner for dinner do check the 'opening hours and days' which are clearly displayed on the door of the Restaurant.

There is also a mobile baker who will deliver freshly baked bread and cakes to your door. The telephone number is in the 'Handbook' at Casa de Lis or you may catch him whizzing through the village!
Ferreira do Zêzere is approximately 10 -15 minutes drive from the house. Here, you will find several Restaurants, Coffee Shops, 2 Supermarkets, Pharmacy, Theatre, Ironmongers, Electrical shop, Garage, Banks, Stationers and a Town Market.

Tomar
The historical town of Tomar is 25 minutes away from Dornes and has everything you may need including a General Hospital and a Shopping Mall - home to the large Supermarket chain 'Contintente'.
